Jesus Proclaims His Fulfillment of Scripture

“When Jesus returns to Nazareth, He goes to the synagogue. He’s asked to read the Scriptures and is handed the Book of Isaiah. From it, He reads Isaiah 61:1-2. The prophecy speaks of bringing good news to the poor, proclaiming liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freeing the oppressed, and announcing that it’s time the Lord will save His people. When He finishes reading, Jesus announces to the people that the prophecy has come true as it was just read.”

Why was Jesus Run Out of Nazareth?

For background on why Jesus was rejected in his hometown of Nazareth, read Luke 4:14-21. In a nutshell, Jesus returns to the town where he grew up and starts a public ministry. One Saturday, he goes to the front of the synagogue – the Jewish house of worship where he spent many Saturdays as a kid — and reads a famous Messianic passage from the Prophet Isaiah. He finishes the prophecy – one that Jewish people had read for nearly 700 years – by identifying himself as the one spoken of by Isaiah.

Opening Up the Gospels

Jesus’ First Rejection in Nazareth

Upon His return to Galilee, Jesus enters his hometown of Nazareth and stands up in the synagogue on the Sabbath. Reading from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, Jesus identifies Himself as the one who will accomplish the things written. The Jews, in utter disbelief, attempt to throw him off of a cliff. This episode develops the importance of Jesus’ words and actions in this scene.

Rejection at Nazareth

Scripture Reference꞉ Luke 4꞉14-30 – Jesus teaches where He grew up in Nazareth. The people don’t like what He is saying, so Jesus leaves. Question 1꞉ Share a time when you were rejected in your community by your friends or family. Question 2꞉ Is there someone you would normally avoid that you need to invite to your home to share this Good News? Question 3꞉ How is it that the people can be amazed at the teaching of Jesus and soon afterwards want Him out of their lives?
