Opening Up the Gospels - launching August 6
My new video podcast, "Opening Up the Gospels", will be launching August 6, 2013. I'll be talking about the importance of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John for our theology, faith, and relationship with God by chronologically walking through the life of Jesus. A new episode will come every Tuesday, so subscribe to my channel so you never miss an episode. Be sure to check out the Opening Up the Gospels section on my website as well:
http://www.joshuahawkins.com/gospels
Episode 1, Christianity and True Friendship - Opening Up the Gospels
In this premiere episode of my weekly video series, Opening Up the Gospels, I talk about the first of four reasons why I'm doing a series on the life of Jesus as seen in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John instead of other hot topics like grace, prayer, or hell. I discuss what it means to actually have a relationship with Jesus and how it must be based on real, substantial knowledge of His life and words. As Christians, we ought to treasure the details of His life simply because we confess that we love Him.

Episode 2, Distorted Versions of Jesus - Opening Up the Gospels
In 2 Corinthians 11, the Apostle Paul warned of others who would come and preach "another Jesus" - a different version of Jesus than the glorious Jesus he had told them about. In this second episode of this series, I discuss the importance of the Gospels in knowing the Jesus of the Bible. If we put our faith in Jesus and desire to grow in friendship with Him, we must know Him as the scriptures present Him, not the way our culture does.

Episode 3, The Gospels and the End of the Age - Opening Up the Gospels
All of human history is moving towards one ultimate end. Scripture tells us that a day is coming when every creature will acknowledge that Jesus is the LORD, the one true living God. The four Gospels give us more than just doctrine about the end of the age - they help us connect relationally with the Person that the end of the age is about. In this episode, I discuss eagerly anticipating Jesus' return and actually missing Him.

Episode 4, The Gospels as God's Story - Opening Up the Gospels
In the past 3 episodes of this series, I've discussed three reasons why I wanted to talk about the Gospels. However, the greatest reason why the four Gospels are important for us to know and treasure as Christians is because Jesus is the one true God. In this episode, I develop Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 4:6: "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God [is] in the face of Christ". At every moment, our God and our Maker is the one who we're supposed to see as we read the Gospels.

Episode 5, Pondering the Life of Jesus, Part 1 - Opening Up the Gospels
When Jesus performed a miracle or taught with authority during His two-year ministry, the crowds were continually filled with awe and wonder. Our overfamiliarity with the stories often leaves us bored and disconnected instead of inciting similar feelings of awe and wonder. How does the life of Jesus move from being a fairy tale to real history in our minds? In the next two episodes, I'll expound upon biblical meditation and prayerful pondering of Jesus' life and words.

Episode 6, Pondering the Life of Jesus, Part 2 - Opening Up the Gospels
In episode 5 of Opening Up the Gospels, I introduced Biblical meditation and a prayerful pondering of Jesus' life as the way for His life and words to become more real to us. In this episode, I give some practical tips on meditation and how to dialogue with Him about His story. I also share a story of how Jesus touched my heart as I talked to Him about the scene in John 2 and the Wedding at Cana.

Episode 7, Introduction to Matthew's Gospel - Opening Up the Gospels
Who wrote Matthew and when was it written? What are some of the key themes of Matthew's Gospel? In this episode of Opening Up the Gospels, I give a very brief overview of some of the important points we should understand as we seek to construct a chronological narrative of Jesus' life from the Gospels. The most important point to know about Matthew's Gospel is that it is arranged thematically and topically, not chronologically.

Episode 8, Introduction to Mark's Gospel - Opening Up the Gospels
Mark is the shortest, most succinct, and most action-packed Gospel out of the four of them. In this episode, I cover Mark's author, the date it was written, and some of the major themes and literary style of the book. The most important point we should understand for the purpose of this series is that Mark is chronologically arranged and focuses on Jesus' ministry in Galilee and the last week of His life before the cross in Jerusalem.

Episode 9, Introduction to Luke's Gospel - Opening Up the Gospels
Luke's Gospel is unique in so many ways - from the way he narrates Jesus' birth to the way he exclusively covers Jesus' ministry in Judea and Perea 6-8 months before the cross. In this episode, I cover Luke's author, the date it was written, and some of the major themes and literary style of the book. The most important point we should understand for the purpose of this series is that Luke is chronologically arranged and includes a large portion of Jesus' ministry not mentioned by the other Gospels.

Episode 10, Introduction to John's Gospel - Opening Up the Gospels
John's Gospel is perhaps the most unique one out of the four. In this episode, I cover John's author, the date it was written, and some of the major themes and literary style of the book. John narrates much of Jesus' activity in and around Jerusalem, focusing on several Jewish feasts (Passover, Tabernacles, Dedication). John also heavily emphasizes Christology, the study of the identity of Jesus, and proclaims that he wrote his gospel to help others put their faith in Him.

Episode 11, Zechariah and Elizabeth - Opening Up the Gospels
Luke begins his Gospel by giving us details of an aged couple, Zechariah and Elizabeth, from the hill country of Judea. Herod the Great ruled over Judea at the time, and Zechariah's priestly course was on duty in the Temple in Jerusalem. Who was Herod? What is the Temple and why is Zechariah there? And what is the significance of these events to the story of Jesus and the Gospels? This episode seeks to answer these questions.

Episode 12, Zechariah and the angel Gabriel - Opening Up the Gospels
In Luke 1, Zechariah is ministering in the Temple, standing and offering incense to the LORD. The angel Gabriel appears to Zechariah and says "your prayer has been heard". Because Zechariah's wife Elizabeth was barren, Gabriel's statement contains a double-meaning for both the aged couple and for Israel. This episode examines Luke 1:11-25 and Gabriel's announcement of the birth of John the Baptist.

Episode 13, Announcing the Birth of Jesus - Opening Up the Gospels
Once again scripture records the angel Gabriel's appearance, this time to a young girl named Mary from a despised town in northern Israel called Nazareth. Not only did Gabriel tell Mary that she was going to be with child by the Holy Spirit, but that her son would be the king that God had promised to David many years before. What was this like and what was Mary's reaction to Gabriel's words? This episode looks at Luke 1:26-38.

Episode 14, Mary and Elizabeth - Opening Up the Gospels
While Herod and the leaders of the Jews are filled with self-importance and jockey for power in Jerusalem, God's eyes are on two expectant mothers in a small house in southern Israel. Mary and Elizabeth, the mother of Jesus and John, were the two most important people on the planet at the time. This episode looks at Mary's visit to Elizabeth from Luke 1.

Episode 15, The Birth of John and the Scandal in Nazareth - Opening Up the Gospels
After at least 9 months of being mute, Zechariah's son John is born. His tongue is loosed and he prophesies that his child will "go before the Lord to prepare his ways". Mary returns to Nazareth, seemingly after John was born, and walks into perhaps the hardest season of her life thus far. She had returned home after 3 months and was showing her pregnancy. What must this have been like for this "highly favored" young woman? Find out in this episode.

Episode 16, Joseph's First Dream - Opening Up the Gospels
On a real night over 2000 years ago, Joseph lay his head down to sleep, undoubtedly troubled in his soul as everything in his life had been turned upside down. The one he loved was pregnant, and not by him! But on that night, he received a dream from the Lord in which an angel gave him confidence to take Mary as his wife. The child within her was indeed of the Holy Spirit, and she had not been unfaithful to him as he presumed. This episode discusses Matthew 1, verses 20-25.

Episode 17, The Census and the Journey to Bethlehem - Opening Up the Gospels
Mary and Joseph travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, a small historic town in Judea. Though Caesar's hand seemingly is driving them southward for a census, God's hand was in their journey, preparing them and keeping them along what was perhaps a week-long journey. Mary is very pregnant with Jesus at this point. Learn more about their trip and what it must have been like for them in this episode as we look at chapter 2 in the Gospel of Luke.

Episode 18, The Birth of Jesus (part 1) - Opening Up the Gospels
In the little town of Bethlehem in southern Israel, Jesus, the future King of Israel and the Maker of all things, is born to two young, frightened parents. What was this really like? Though our yearly Christmas pageants and Hollywood have taken creative license on many of the details, the story of Jesus' birth from the Gospels is a remarkable one. This episode examines just a couple of verses from Luke 2.

Episode 19, The Birth of Jesus (part 2) - Opening Up the Gospels
So often we approach the little town of Bethlehem and peer at the Babe in that manger and walk away saying "isn't that cute, thank you Jesus for your coming". Yet if we are to be true to Scripture, we have to remember we're not only looking at the first sinless human since Adam in the garden, but we're seeing God in the flesh. This episode discusses the fear of the Lord and the measure of awe and reverence we should have when pondering this scene from the Gospels.

Episode 20, The Birth of Jesus (part 3) - Opening Up the Gospels
What does the helpless Babe lying in an animal feed trough tell us about what God is like? In the story of Jesus' birth as recorded in Matthew and Luke, we are given a window into His breathtaking meekness and humility. From the circumstances leading up to His birth to that beautiful moment in Bethlehem, God forever declared His love and desire for the creatures He made to be with Him and to see His glory.

Episode 21, The Shepherds (part 1) - Opening Up the Gospels
God could have announced the birth of Jesus to the elite ruling class in Jerusalem, but He chose to tell the outcasts of Jewish society. A lowly band of shepherds were the first to hear of the birth of "Christ the Lord" in Bethlehem. This episode discusses the political and military implications of the weighty phrase, "Christ the Lord" and links it to the developing story of the Gospels.

Biblical Foundations of "Messiah" and "Christ" - Opening Up the Gospels
In today's culture, "Christ" is often a synonym for "Jesus" or perhaps His last name. "Messiah" is a synonym for "Savior" and often just means "the one who died on the cross for us". While there is some measure of truth to those things, "Christ" and "Messiah" have largely been misunderstood. Find out what the Bible is saying when the scriptures use those words in this video.
This video is a supplement to the original episode in "Opening Up the Gospels", a weekly video series on the life of Jesus. Watch the original episode here: http://www.joshuahawkins.com/resources/videos/2013/12/episode-21-shepherds-part-1

Episode 22, The Shepherds (part 2) - Opening Up the Gospels
Lowly shepherds are given the "good news" that a baby who was "Christ the Lord" had been born in Bethlehem. Before they could even compose themselves, Luke 2 tells us that a multitude of the "heavenly host" appeared to them in the sky in a valley just outside Bethlehem. But are these angels really choirs that are "sweetly singing o'er the plains"? The answer the Bible gives may surprise you. Find out in this episode!

Episode 23, The Early Days of Jesus - Opening Up the Gospels
When Jesus was eight days old, He was circumcised according to the Law. 32 days later, Mary and Joseph travel to Jerusalem to make a sacrifice for their purification and present Jesus before a priest. Why did Jesus have to be circumcised and what does it have to do with the covenant God made with His people? What were these days like? Find out in this episode as we look at Luke 2.

Episode 24, Simeon (part 1) - Opening Up the Gospels
As Mary and Joseph are in the Temple to offer their sacrifice and present Jesus before a priest, a righteous man named Simeon approaches them and takes up Jesus in his arms. This episode examines the details of Luke 2 verses 25 through 32.

Luke 2 tells us about an aged Jew, Simeon, who had been eagerly waiting for the fulfillment of all of God's promises to Israel. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that the child Jesus would be the One who would bring all that the Prophets had promised to pass. But Jesus would be much more - according to Simeon, He would divide Israel and cause the truth about how Israel really felt about God to be exposed.

Anna was a regular attender of the public and private Temple services, and is presented as yet another picture of the remnant of Israel who were waiting for the fulfillment of God's promises to the nation.

The story of John the Baptist precedes the ministry of Jesus in all four Gospels and is critical for rightly understanding why Jesus says what He says and does what He does. Episode 37, The Message of John the Baptist (part 2) - Opening Up the Gospels
The significance of John's message to the nation of Israel is only heightened when we see that he is baptizing. Yet it is important to remember the audience of his proclamation was not Gentiles, but the Jews, the physical descendants of Abraham. This episode examines the importance of baptism and how offensive it would have been for John to call the Jews to be baptized.

This is yet another example of John's offensive message to Israel. This episode also discusses the "baptism of fire", which may be something quite different than you think!

As we trace "the seed" (Genesis 3:15), the message of John and the story of the Gospels will become much clearer to you.
