DECISION TIME

Objects suggested: A wallet.

Let’s talk about the decisions we make each day. We decide what to eat, when to go to bed, what clothes to put on, what to read, who will make a good friend. Can you think of more examples?

Most of the examples we listed would allow many choices. When you decide what to eat you could choose between a peach or an apple, bread or a cracker, soup or yogurt, or you could choose one of each.

Now let me give you an example of having two choices, but you must choose just one thing. Suppose you see a wallet lying in the street. It might have a lot of money in it. You can keep the wallet or you can try to return the wallet to its owner. This is a right or wrong decision. You must choose to do one thing or the other.

The Bible tells us the story of Joshua, a leader of a group of people called the Israelites and it is a story about making an important decision.

This group of people, the Israelites, had been slaves in Egypt and Joshua was one of the men who led them out to a new land. God had protected and helped the people during this journey, but some chose to worship other gods which, in this story, are called foreign gods.

TO WHOM SHALL WE GO?

Objects suggested: Books, a backpack, or other items suggesting it is time to go back to school.

It is back to school time! Does that make you happy, or are you sad? Are you excited? Nervous? Afraid? You needn’t be ashamed if you are a little bit nervous or afraid. After all, you will be facing a lot of new things. You will have to make a lot of choices. What are some of the choices you will have to make when you start back to school? (Allow time for the children to answer, but if they don’t respond, here are some suggestions to get them started.) Well, if your school does not require uniforms, one of the first things you will have to choose is what you will wear the first day of school. That is pretty important, isn’t it? After all, you want to look your best and make a good impression. When you get to your classroom, you will have to choose where you want to sit. Is it best to sit up front, at the back, or maybe somewhere in the middle? When it is time for lunch, you will have to choose what you want to eat in the cafeteria. Will you choose chicken nuggets or pizza?

THE TREASURE INSIDE

By Louis Parker Edstrom

Objects Suggested: A jewelry box, peas in pods.

A treasure chest is a sturdy box that holds valuable things. You may have heard stories about pirates who once sailed the seas. They took gold and silver from other ships, put it in a treasure chest, and then buried the chest to hide the loot.

Perhaps your mother has a jewelry box that holds necklaces, bracelets, or rings. The jewelry box protects the valuable items stored inside.

In nature we also find examples of sturdy containers that protect and hold valuable things. A beautiful, bright green pea pod is sturdy and protects the delicate peas which are attached inside. Peas are valuable, not only as good food for us to eat, but as seeds which will grow more peas.

WHERE DO YOU GO?

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Objects Suggested: None

Do you ever feel as if you need advice?

You might ask someone’s advice about how to fix your bike, bake a cake, how to fly a kite…

You may need someone’s advice about where to find something that has been misplaced.

Maybe you are having a hard time making a decision. You don’t know if you should take dance lessons or play soccer; choose swimming lessons or an art class.

You may need the guidance of a good teacher when you are learning something new.

Perhaps there is a bully in your neighborhood or at your school and you need advice about how to handle that situation.

There are many reasons and times when we need advice and guidance.

Friends to the End

Some friendships last a lifetime. The work and commitment we put into these relationships reflect the faith decision we make for Jesus. This work and commitment are what we bring to the Eucharist.

CHILDREN’S READINGS

In the story for the first reading, Joanie’s parents squabbled over travel plans as they drove. Joanie called on them to make a choice, just like Joshua did to the Israelites. In the story for the gospel, Andrea and Mary were best friends until Mary moved away. Andrea was loyal to Mary, but Mary let the friendship wither away. Do we allow our relationship with Jesus to wither?

FAMILY ACTIVITY

Some friendships are temporary, some last for years. Share the gospel and discuss the virtues that make for a lasting relationship. How do these virtues help us to be better followers of Jesus?
