5th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year A

The readings for the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time focus on evangelization and service. The first reading tells us that when we care for those in need, the darkness in our lives will turn to light. The second reading helps us remember that we do not rely on our own wisdom when we speak and act, but on God. And the gospel tells us that we should boldly spread the Light of Christ throughout the world.

All Together Now – A Lesson Plan on Racism

Racism can be a difficult topic to discuss with teens. It is popular to think that we are “color blind”. But the fact is that the playing field is not level and that minorities do not have the same advantages as the majority.  This lesson plan on racism introduces the topic of institutional racism.

The Corporal Works of Mercy

The gospels show us that Jesus reached out to those in need. His life is a model for how we should interact with others. One way to do this is through the Corporal Works of Mercy. Consider looking at these and doing one with the Catholic youth in your life

You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

GRADES
1-3

Jesus said that we should improve life in the way that salt improves the flavor of food. We should be light for the world so that others will follow us in praising God.

GRADES
4, 5, and 6

Jesus’ call to be salt for the earth and light for the world powerfully states our mission as Church and as Christians. Our commitment to and action for social justice flow from the exhortation that Jesus gives us in today’s Gospel.

GRADES
7-8

Young people are always in need of affirmation. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus affirms us by saying that we are salt and light. However, we are called to live up to this affirmation through our deeds.

Children today are more than familiar with the idea of plugging in, and most understand how important it is to have power supply for electronic devices. This lesson aims to capitalize on that concept with a related discussion of shining our “Christ light” on others, after first receiving a “power charge” from God, to whom we must stay connected first and foremost.

Salt of the Earth

OBJECT: Several samples of food, one salted and another unsalted. (crackers and popcorn, for example)

Jesus said to his disciples, “You are the salt of the earth.”

Have you ever been in a grocery store when, as you did your shopping, they offered samples of different food items to try? They do this to entice you to buy those items. If the samples didn’t taste good, you probably wouldn’t buy any, would you? This morning we are going to do a taste test. You will taste two different samples of a food item, and you will tell which one you liked the best.

Shake that Salt!

OBJECT: Snow globe, if available, or use directions to make one.

How do we keep the world from forgetting the Good News?

Salt! Now that’s a weird thing to call anybody! Jesus called us salt. He said his disciples were salt for the whole world. Let’s think about salt. What do people use salt for? [Respect all answers]. For flavor, yes. Especially on popcorn.

Bring Out the Flavor

OBJECT: Salt and/or pickles.

esus said, “You are the salt of the earth.”How exciting to think that we can bring out the flavors of life.

Do you like pickles? Part of what makes a pickle taste so good is salt.

You may also like a little salt sprinkled on your breakfast eggs or on popcorn. Salt brings out the flavors of food like no other ingredient can.

Salt is also important to our health. We need it so that our bodies will keep the right balance of water in our tissues. It helps…
