The Jesuit Music Ministry (JMM) is an official ministry in the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus, traces its roots to the pioneering work of Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros SJ, who began composing Filipino liturgical songs in response to the mandate of Vatican II in the ‘60s. Vatican II’s Sacrosanctum Concilium urged the entire assembly to actively participate in the liturgy that includes singing. From the first song Fr. Honti composed for a group of young boys and girls in Barangka, Marikina to the songs composed by present generation Jesuits and lay partners, JMM songs have been sung in churches not only in the Philippines but all over the world.
Bukas Palad is a community of young people from the Philippines who compose, record, and perform original Filipino religious music. In 1987, Marty McCall wrote a song that “heightened awareness of our varied cultures gives us a unique pathway to celebrate and worship God together.” With David Maddux and The Mas Brothers, twin pastors from Zaire, he conceptualized an English and Swahili song for the American Christian music trio, First Call. Lyrics came from William H. Draper’s “All Creatures of Our God and King” which paraphrases lines from St. Francis of Assisi’s “The Canticle of the Sun.”
