2nd Sunday of Advent, Year C
God will show all the earth the splendor of Jerusalem
- The passage from Baruch borrows the prophetic language of Second Isaiah which presents a glorious vision of the vindication of God’s people.
- Jerusalem, clothed in the glory and justice of God, would welcome her children home.
- All creation would share in the delight and make a smooth shady path for the people of God.

MATTIA PRETI
LOYOLA PRESS (2:49) – Mattia Preti’s St. John the Baptist Preaching shows John in the wilderness, sharing his message with a small crowd of captivated followers. He is surrounded by symbols that invite us into his story. The red garment that envelops half of his body brings to mind the martyrdom he will endure. The staff and banner are signs of his prophetic role heralding the coming of Christ, and the lamb at the bottom center of the scene echoes John’s announcement of Christ as the Lamb of God.
Auguste Rodin
CHRISTIAN ART (5:37) – Auguste Rodin’s sculpture of St. John the Baptist received a mixed reception when it first appeared, seeming larger than life and too primitive to exude the humility of St. John the Baptist, the precursor of Christ and the last of the great prophets.
EL GRECO
CHRISTIAN ART (4:46) – In El Greco’s mannerist painting of Saint John the Baptist (c.1600), we witness his crude and unmixed use of vibrant dynamic colour. Although typical of the Master’s work, this treatment is markedly less boastful than his other works dated around the same period.
CARAVAGGIO
NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART (7:35) – “Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness,” by Caravaggio, is a Baroque period painting on display at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Painted circa 1604, the painting is characterized by its dramatic chiaroscuro technique that contrasts light and shadows, and innovative depiction of Saint John the Baptist as a brooding adolescent. Learn more about this masterpiece from Julián Zugazagoitia, Director of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, in this episode.
